RED Epic S35

2006 was a big year.  Paul McCartney  split from 2nd wife Heather Mills, the Enron execs were found guilty of conspiracy and fraud, and, most importantly, at NAB in Las Vegas a new company called RED exhibited the prototype of a camera that would lead to THE, not ‘a’, paradigm shift in the way we produce media.  Major.

If you already know us, you’ve likely heard endless discussion about our RED One camera (#1952).  Well hold tight, because here comes the next one, the RED EPIC S35.  Ours is already on order.  When we receive it, we’ll be a 2 RED shop.  Very exciting.

This company, from a combined perspective of customer service, product development and execution is one of the best we’ve ever encountered.  Their relentless pursuit  to deliver the level of innovation to which RED customers have become accustomed has been fierce.

Here are some quick highlights of the new camera:

Mysterium X 5K raw resolution sensor.  Sick.  Our Red One is 4.5K.  Check out how big that is:

One of the nice features with this new sensor is that we can actually capture 100fps @ 5K.  That’s a big jump from our current 60fps @ 2K.  Another sweet feature is the modularity of the camera.  We don’t have it yet, but we believe that in its lightest iteration, it’ll be significantly lighter than our current Red One and mountable on our current Steadi-Cam Flyer.  Nice.  When we began upgrading from our HVX200 package, we thought that our Steadi-Cam rig wasn't going keep up with the weight of the RED and that we'd have to upgrade if we wanted to marry both pieces of gear.  With the modular Epic, we're just fine.

Next in our hunt will be some new lenses.....
